Mass Communication

Mass Communication Department is one of the departments that is highly regarded in the Polytechnic. It was established in the mid 80s under the then Department of Liberal Arts. At that time the department offered certificate courses such as Intermediate certificate in Mass Communication and Advanced certificate in Mass Communication. It was later to commence National Diploma programme in the 90s. She got accreditation to run HND programs in 2003 under the leadership of the then Head of Department (HOD) Dr. Abubakar Abdul Dzukogi. Today it has about fifty 45 teaching staff and 5 non teaching staff. The department is known for training professional mass communicators and has had, and still having many of its graduates working in various media houses across the country.

Addmission Requirement

National Diploma Requirement (ND)

Candidate should possess 5 O’level credit in English language, Mathematics, Physics, and any two of the following; Economics/Commerce, Chemistry, Geography, Further mathematics, Biology, Technical drawing, Wood work/Metal work.

Higher National Diploma Requirement (HND)

Minimum of five credits including English, Mathematics, English Literature, and ND minimum of lower credit
 
 
 

Dr. Mrs. Alice Aladi Jonah

Head of Department
Dr. Mrs. Alice Aladi Jonah was born in 1968 at Zaria. She attended Dogon Bauchi L.E.A. Primary School, Zaria, Army Day Secondary School, Depot Zaria, University of Jos (Diploma in Mass Comm.), University of Maiduguri (B.A. Mass Comm.), Benue State University Makurdi (MS.C Mass Comm.), and University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Ph.D Mass Comm.) She joined the services of The Federal Polytechnic, Bida, in 2006, the first female lecturer in the department. She has served the institution in various capacities such as Asst. Exams Officer, Communications Officer STEP-B, Asst. Secretary and P.R.O ASUP-BD, and a host of others. She is the Producer/Presenter of the radio program, Family Matters on Standard FM 89.3 The Federal Polytechnic, Bida. She has risen through the ranks to the position of Chief Lecturer. She is the first female lecturer and first female Head of Department, Mass Communication. Dr. Jonah Alice is also an entrepreneur, she is the manufacturer of Moringa Herbal Soap. She is a prolific writer and author of: When A woman is Childless (2005), Unguided Footsteps (2008), Building a happy family for sustainable universe (2012), The Proud Princess and other Stories (2012), Precious Mother (2014), Asmau and the pot of wealth & other stories (2015), Aokpe London (2018) and A Life of Value (2018). She has published numerous local and international journals and published over 30 articles in The Catholic Animator Newspaper, as well as the following Book Chapter contributions: Mass Media as Agents of Attitude Formation for Peaceful transformation: The Nigerian Example. In, Studies in Communication, Mass Media and Society. Discourses and Debates. Edited by Jonathan E. Aliede, Ph.D (2015) and Digital Media use for civic engagement by youths in Niger State, Nigeria. In, Digital Media Communication & Civic Engagement in Nigeria. (ACCE) (2020). She is a member of African Council for Communication Education (ACCE) (Nigerian Chapter), Institute of Mass Communication and Information Management of Nigeria. (IMIM), Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) and Women Writers Association (Niger Chapter). She is married with children and grandchildren. Her hobbies include: Writing, Reading, Listening to music, singing, Dancing, Sewing and playing Badminton
