The Department of Chemical Engineering, The Federal Polytechnic Bida, Nigeria is as old as the Polytechnic itself which was established in 1978. with its establishment, the Department served as the Centre of Excellence in Chemical Engineering in the Country. The department has 1. National Programme 2. Higher National Diploma Programme 3. Plans are on to introduce a National Diploma Programme in Pharmaceutical Technology The department is made up of the following units: (a) Unit Operations Laboratory. This laboratory is undoubtedly the most equipped in all the Universities and Polytechnics offering Chemical Engineering Courses in Nigeria. (b) Biochemical Engineering Laboratory with the state of art equipment for research work that accommodates both MSc and PhD students from different Institutions of higher learning in the Country. (c) Spray Drying Unit. This unit has an industrial size spray drier capable of producing different brands of detergents, powdered milk, custard to mention but a few. The department has 5 PhD, 21 MSc, 2 BSc, 2 PGD and 4 HND holders. AWARDS The following awards have uplifted the image of the department in particular and the Polytechnic in general: (1) The department has won the STEP-B award, a soft loan from the World Bank to the Government of Nigeria during the regime of President Olusegun Obasanjo between 2008 to 2013. The aim was to improve Science and Technology education in Post-Secondary Institutions in the Country especially for the Girl-Child Education. The awardee is Engr. Dr. Aliyu Haruna Baba, FNSChE, FNSE, COREN, the current Rector of this Polytechnic, who is a staff of the Department. (2) Currently, there is an ongoing National Research Fund (NRF) programme awarded by The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) which is headed by Engr. Dr. Abdullahi Mohammed of the Department of Chemical Engineering, The Federal Polytechnic Bida. The research is on the “Development of a novel bacteria- nanographene oxide (b-Ngo) base smart sandcrete composite for CO2 sequestration and crack mitigation”

Engr Abdullahi Ahmed Alkali

Head of Department
Engr Abdullahi Ahmed Alkali attended Kofar Eyagi Primary School, Bida in Niger State, Nigeria between 1974 – 1980 and Government Teachers College Wushishi from 1980 to 1985. he obtained the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Chemical Engineering at The Federal Polytechnic Bida (famous for the Bida Standard) in 1991 and 1998 respectively. He was at the Federal University of Technology Minna, Nigeria from 1999 and 2000 where he obtained a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Chemical Engineering. He furthered his studies at the University of Wolverhampton, United Kingdom where he obtained an MSc degree in Environmental Pollution Control in the year 2015. Engr Alkali joined the services of The Federal Polytechnic Bida in the Department of Chemical Engineering on 30th June 1992 and rose through the ranks to the position of a Chief Lecturer in the year 2021. He was appointed the Deputy Director of Academic Planning Unit (APU) from 3rd December 2010 to 17th January 2014 and he is elected in July 2023 as the current Head of Department of Chemical Engineering of the Institution. He is a corporate member of many professional bodies including Nigeria Society of Chemical Engineers (MNSChE), Nigeria Society of Engineers (MNSE), Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Chemical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) and International Research and Development Institute (MIRDI). He has to his credit, numerous national and international journals publications and has many national and international academic conferences. He was meritoriously awarded with the Staff Adviser Award of Honour in 2019 and a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration (FCIA). He is widely travelled and has visited many countries.
