The Polytechnic started in 1977 and the Dept of Mechanical Engineering was among the Departments that started with it. It started with the N. N. D four year programme that was later divided into two programmes of ND and HND. The first Head of Department was Mr Petrov of Bulgarian Nationality. Many of the initial equipment and machines were supplied by the Bulgarian government under an agreement with the Nigerian government. The department runs two streams of programmes in HND, Plant and Manufacturing. It currently has plans to run programmes in Mechatronics Engineering, Welding and Renewable energy technology. The department currently has about 40 staff with different degrees and competences; seven(7) having PhD, fifteen (15) with Masters degree, two (2) with first degree and twelve (12) with HND. The department has graduated many hundreds of students since inception The Department hosts many laboratories and workshops; Strength of materials, Fluid mechanics, Aututronics and Mechatronics laboratories. Workshops include: foundry, machine, welding, fitting and automotive workshops. There is however many rooms for improvement. The department had many research brakethroughs that had projected the name of the Polytechnic . The department is hosted in the Mechanical engineering complex that accommodates staff offices, Class rooms, laboratories and workshops.

Addmission Requirement
National Diploma Requirement (ND)
Five O’level credit passes in not more than two sittings in the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one other subject from Biology/Agric. SC, Further Mathematics, Economics/Commerce, Statistics, Technical Drawing, Auto-Mechanics, Metal work and other relevant subject.
Higher National Diploma Requirement (HND)
Five credits level passed in the West African School Certificate (WASC), GCE, SSSC, NECO, TCII, NTC Ordinary level, in not more than two sittings. The subjects must include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one other subject from: Biology/Agric.Sc, Further Mathematics, Economics/Commerce, Statistics, Technical Drawing, Auto-Mechanics, Metal work and other relevant subject. In addition to above, the candidate must have National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with one year industrial training.
Engr.Dr. Peter Tsado Zubairu
Head of Department
Engr.Dr. Peter Tsado Zubairu hails from Faigi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State. Attended Central Primary School, Tsaragi between 1979-1985; proceeded for his secondary school education between 1985-1991 and obtained his SSCE at Government Secondary School Lafiagi. He proceeded to the Federal University of Technology, Minna, where he obtained his first degree (B.Eng) in Mechanical Engineering in year 2000. He later obtained his M.Eng in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, in 2016 and PhD in 2023, from the Federal University of Technology, Minna. He worked as a factory engineer with Heritage water, Ilorin 2005-2006. Engr. Dr. P.T. Zubairu joined the services of Federal Polytechnic, Bida in 2006 as an assistant lecturer, rose through the ranks to become a Chief lecturer in 2023. He became the Head of Department, Mechanical Engineering in 2022.
